What exactly is SIP Trunking?
What is SIP Trunking? Although it appears to be a confusing technical acronym, you may be surprised with how commonly SIP technology is utilized every single day. A SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunk is nothing but a phone that connects to an IP network.SIP trunks are especially useful for telephony applications like call forwarding and conference calling.
The term “Session Initiation Protocol” is a process that enables communication over secured networks. It enables data to be delivered in an appropriate manner and speed. SIP is a framing language that enables different systems to exchange data as part of a session. This is the fundamental technology used for Internet Telephony.
In simple terms, SIP enables voice calls over an internet connection. It also enables data to be sent and received on the internet using a phone. A SIP phone can be any kind of telephone, including landlines and mobiles. It is usually associated with voice communication via a microphone and speakers. Most of these phones are equipped with a killer machine, which allows a caller to press a number to connect to the internet service and then dial into a private phone number.
The basic purpose behind SIP telephony is to provide an alternative to traditional phone service. In layman’s terms, it is a way of making telephone calls over the internet using the same system, which is used for making calls over the traditional phone system. This system basically works like a computer that is connected to the internet and the phone service using a modem or cable. There are different types of connections and this includes cable, wireless broadband, and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
Internet connections are not only used by the SIP trunks for private communication; they also serve a useful purpose for internet telephony. As previously mentioned, they help in making phone calls over the internet. They do this by extending phone services outside the traditional telephone network, where a typical telephone network is located. For instance, an office in downtown Manhattan can be connected to a phone service provider in the Middle East or Asia. By using special equipment that acts like a switch or a router, the data can be switched from one place to another at a fraction of the price it would normally cost, if the local telephone company was used.
The internet also serves a useful purpose for security reasons. If the information being transferred is secure, then the whole process of what makes a SIP trunk line is made much easier. This makes it possible to maintain security against hackers who may try to intercept information that can be used to harm the user. This security process is also useful when the user wants to access information from a location that is not part of their normal working network.
